Check the whole route Use Google Maps or Japan Travel by NAVITIME for a starting route, then confirm the operator, destination sign, platform, and departure time. Local, rapid, and express services do not stop at the same stations.
Tap the same card in and out For an eligible local trip, tap an IC card or device at entry and exit. A physical card, iPhone, and Apple Watch are not interchangeable mid-journey. Ask staff if the gate rejects your card; do not follow someone through.
Buy the extra ticket when needed Shinkansen and many limited-express services need a separate ticket or reservation beyond the ordinary fare. A booked service linked to an IC card, such as a supported SmartEX reservation, is not paid simply by loading that card with money.
Check the last connection Most rail networks do not run through the night. Check service notices and the last usable connection, including transfers. Ask station staff in advance about step-free routes or boarding assistance.
Check the doors and fare system Some buses use rear boarding and front exit; others use front boarding and a flat fare. Follow the signs. On a distance-based cash route, take a numbered ticket if instructed and match it to the fare display.
Use IC only where accepted Look for the accepted-card logos on that route. Some services require a tap at boarding and alighting; flat-fare services may only require one. Local-only cards or cash may be needed outside the major networks.
Keep a cash fallback Have coins and small yen notes for a cash fare or the change machine. Many buses cannot change large notes. Press the stop button in time and ask the driver for help only when it is safe.
Book coaches separately Airport and highway buses may require a ticket, seat reservation, or QR code rather than an IC tap. Check the exact stop, luggage allowance, cancellation terms, and final departure with the operator.

General information only. Confirm current routes, timetables, fares, accessibility, accepted payment methods, and card terms with the operator before traveling.
