Where should you start?

YOUR FIRST WEEKS
ENGLISH + NO LOCAL BANK

Compare newcomer providers.

Sakura Mobile advertises English sign-up and overseas credit/debit payment without a Japanese bank account. Mobal is another English-language option to investigate. Confirm the voice product and documents before ordering.

READY FOR A LONGER-TERM PLAN

Compare the regular bill.

Look at online value plans if you can manage their application and support language. Prefer a counter? Compare the main carriers, UQ mobile, and Y!mobile. Check home and workplace coverage before committing.

Do you need a number?

SERVICE BEFORE SIM FORMAT

A number for everyday life.

The usual starting point for residents who need ordinary calls, SMS, and mobile internet. Check that the plan includes a Japanese mobile number and supports the verification services you need.

Available as physical SIM or eSIM on supported products. The SIM format does not determine whether voice is included.

PHYSICAL SIM OR eSIM?

Both can provide voice or data, depending on the plan. Check your exact handset model, carrier lock, network bands, and voice compatibility. eSIM also requires device support and Wi-Fi for setup; identity checks still apply.

7 / 7 OPTIONS
  • ENGLISH-FIRST

    Sakura Mobile

A useful first comparison if you need English support and do not yet have a Japanese bank account.

    Support
    English sign-up and support
    Payment
Advertises overseas credit and debit card payment; check your card and the selected plan.

Its resident voice plans include a Japanese phone number. Compare the full recurring cost with domestic budget plans once you are established.

  • NEWCOMER OPTION

    Mobal

Another English-language provider to investigate for getting connected around arrival.

    Support
    English-language service
    Payment
Check accepted overseas cards and billing terms for your chosen product.

Choose the specific voice or data product carefully. Confirm current identity, activation, delivery, and payment requirements before ordering.

  • SHOP-BASED CARRIERS

    docomo / au / SoftBank

Start here if an in-person appointment and help with documents matter more than finding the lowest headline price.

    Support
    Retail shops; language availability varies
    Payment
Ask about credit-card or bank-debit requirements and overseas-card acceptance.

Check language support at the specific shop. Family or home-internet discounts may not apply to you; handset installments are a separate commitment.

  • USAGE-BASED OPTION

    Rakuten Mobile

Worth comparing for a plan whose data charge follows usage, especially if your usage varies month to month.

    Support
Online and shops; confirm language support
    Payment
Check supported cards or bank debit and any payment-method fees.

Check coverage at home and work. Confirm the current calling-app conditions, exclusions, and any difference between app calls and normal dialer calls.

  • ONLINE VALUE PLANS

    ahamo / povo / LINEMO

Compare when you can manage identity verification and ongoing account support online, often in Japanese.

    Support
    Primarily online
    Payment
Accepted cards, bank debit, and application routes differ by brand.

These are different products: compare ahamo allowances, povo top-up validity and inactivity rules, and LINEMO tiers. Do not assume the parent carrier shop offers full support.

  • VALUE WITH SHOP ACCESS

    UQ mobile / Y!mobile

A middle ground to compare when you want a lower-cost plan with access to participating shops.

    Support
    Online and participating shops
    Payment
Confirm accepted cards or bank debit for the application route.

Compare the price without family, home-internet, or card discounts first. Check which procedures the shop handles and whether assistance costs extra.

  • BUDGET MVNO

    IIJmio

A candidate for modest data use when you can manage a mostly Japanese-language application and support process.

    Support
    Mostly Japanese-language online support
    Payment
Check current credit-card requirements and eligible cardholders.

An MVNO uses another operator's network. Coverage and congestion performance are different questions; speeds can vary at busy times. Choose a voice product if you need calls.

A shortlist, not a price or coverage ranking. Compare the current tax-inclusive price without discounts you do not qualify for, plus activation, calls, SMS, and handset payments.

05 CHECKPOINTS
  1. 01

    Confirm identity and address documents

For a resident contract, prepare your residence card with current address and the provider's requested supporting documents. Passport, remaining period of stay, age, and online identity-verification requirements vary. A tourist product may have a different document list.

  2. 02

Confirm a payment method you already have

Ask whether your overseas card is accepted for recurring payments, or whether a Japanese bank account is needed. Sakura Mobile advertises overseas credit/debit payment without a Japanese bank account. A debit-card logo alone is not proof of acceptance by every carrier.

  3. 03

    Check your exact phone model

Confirm the phone is carrier-unlocked, supports the selected network and voice service, and accepts the required physical SIM or eSIM. Regional variants differ. Use the carrier's compatibility list, especially for an imported handset.

  4. 04

Choose a new number or a number transfer

A first Japanese contract normally needs a new number. MNP transfers an eligible existing Japanese mobile number, not your overseas number. Match the subscriber name and follow the new carrier's transfer instructions.

  5. 05

Activate and test before relying on the line

Use a trusted Wi-Fi connection for eSIM installation, follow the activation and APN instructions, then test mobile data, an ordinary call, and SMS on a voice plan. Choose the correct default lines on a dual-SIM phone and check overseas roaming settings. Never place a test call to an emergency number.
